The German School
Education | Ground-Up Construction
L&K Partners/Newgrange Construction partnered with The German School Brooklyn to lead the design and construction for the school’s new campus located in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The project called for the transformation of a small, vacant lot into a 4-story, 37,000sf school housing 500 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
With a limited construction budget and specified space allocation, the project maximizes the buildable area with virtually all spaces designed for multiple uses: the gymnasium on the ground floor can be used as an auditorium, its stage can be partitioned off as a music room, the multimedia classroom is also a presentation room, the library on the first floor can also be used as a break zone and meeting area if required, and the roof becomes a playground and sports field.
As a leader in the community it was important for GSB to create an environment that not only fosters learning, but does so while being mindful of their impact on the planet. The new school is designed following “passive house” sustainable building practices, which includes thick, continuous exterior insulation, airtight construction, rooftop solar panels, high performance windows to reduce heating and cooling needs, and balanced, mechanical air ventilation to achieve superior indoor air quality.
